‘70% of Australians now produce something you cannot drop on your foot’ - Dale Spender
From Charles Leadbeater
Reality of Innovation
- comes from immersion
- fail early but often
- collaborative
- admitting ignorance
- mostly development (sometimes you can’t afford to wait until things break)
- borrowing
- look sideways and backwards
- networked, open innovation
- consumers as innovators
- but unlearning is just as vital
To deal with infobesity, need to get better at saying ‘no, I won’t read that’, rather than not getting it in the first place, goal is to be ‘info-slim’ rather than have a ‘poverty of ideas’. Need guidelines to manage how information is circulated eg providing brief summaries - BBC strictly limit board papers to 4 A4 pages.
After morning tea we were asked to highlight keypoints so far - Our table flagged Simplicity, Sharing of IP (no value in owning content unless information is commercial in confidence, you can find duplicates of most information easily, no ‘handout’ is irreplacable), and Horizontal facilitation which is learners learning from each other, and also drawing on them as experts.
Flowing from a conversation about people networking and how the organisation gives permission to network both internally and externally. There are 3 kinds of people that are vital:
- Hubs - the people who can answer the questions focussed internally
- Linkers - who can refer you to a hub
- Bridgers - who network externally to the organisation and bring info in and feed info out.
BBC also have resource development tools available for all (use Toolbox 3.0). Uses templates for learning design, power to build modules given out to the masses. Also each internal course has an online space, template driven, can be as simple or as complex as needed and wanted. Based on templates in Word and Powerpoint so that there could be no “I can’t do it” barriers.
Learning Organisations - where everyone sees themselves as a learner, a teacher and a source of business knowledge.
There is more information about the BBC on Wikipedia than there is on the BBC site. Wikipedia is a great example of a self-healing, self-generating organism. Anyone internally can ask for a wiki to be set up, with both open and closed groups accepted. Information literacy is critical in this world - being conscious of potential for bias, this goes for all websites. Through the huge audience using wikipedia, there is a quicker moderation of dodgy information being added.
