Flickr as the introductory Social Software tool

Alan Levine suggests that when introducing Social Software and Web 2.0 in demonstrations, a ‘less is more’ approach could be the key. There is a lot of social software one can do with just one little flickr.”

I’ve experienced this myself in workshops where I combined Blogging and RSS using Bloglines. One or the other I decided for the next round as it’s too much in one hit when starting from scratch.
I have shown the creative commons pool of photos on Flickr to a few people - learning to search effectively and find the right photo is not always easy. Encouraging people to contribute their own shots is the next stage - inevitably people can’t find very specific shots, so when they do take them, sharing online would be great. Being able to bring in a feed of recently added photos for a specific tag seems to get people excited, but a few have been worried about getting photos they don’t see as belonging. Hmm. I’m more of the opinion that if 95% are on target, then they’re ahead.
Maybe I need to run some Flickr workshops this year in addition to Intro to Blogging?
