Anna and Ian - Migrant Education wikis
Settle In
Online settlement information for newly arrived migrants and former refugeees.
Issue has been information overload at the time of first arrival, with the potential for information not to be taken in, or forgotten quickly - and then when the information is needed, it is not there.
Level 2 & 3 learners researched a variety of topics and gather information, In text, image and collating into powerpoints and cwiki pages.
Other learners use the resources as part of their programs.
Learning Outcomes: understanding written and spoken information, and particularly spoken instructions are a key activity. Appplying those skills to real life situations.
The resources are being loaded to the MeinTassie wiki - big, messy and fun. The information section is the main focus for 2010 project. Aranged by topic eg emergency, police, metro, and similar.
So far we have maded 5 videos, 3 pod walks, edited and captioned videos using camtasia ( some problems) and uploading to the wiki has started example is the Health page about the Royal Hobart Hospital. This has been translated into Nepali for the Bhutanese refugees who are a large group. This translation is just an audio translation. Captions are on screen in English.
Students are enjoying the challenge of organizing the interviews to do the filming, who will do what, as well as the more obvious learning in putting together the finished resource.
Evaluation survey of 34 students in 4 classes, and feedback has been very positive.
