Technologies for learning - a VET PD framework
This followed from Toni-Maree Pettigrew's talk and they are from the same work area of Learning Technologies.
The groups so far have been small enough for Q&A to happen well - in fact also in the keynote.
From a quick scan through the paper I'm interested to hear how the cert IV and Diploma *won't* do what they want. Continuing to use unaccredited training is an nteresting one. Keen to hear more.
Program called Technologies for learning.
Just noticed the tagline in the Qld ppts 'clever+skilled+creative'
Why?
Strategic drivers both from national and state policies, COAG, Qld Skills Plan, Departmental plans.
Pulł - from industry, RTOs, clients/ students
Current activity - huge amount of info available, range of learning options.
Photo of milking stool
One leg of the milking stool is infrastructure (software, hardware, access, bandwidth).
Next leg product (teaching and learning resources)
Final leg - capabilty of teaching staff
Need all three legs but capability is the one we are looking at here today.
Need to have a balance between rhetoric and reality.
Grew out of a Cross-institute Learnscope project, need identified for a systemic approach to capability in this area. Based on SCIT work and extended. Wanted to look for a holistic approach - not just tech focussed. Wanted a flexible, action learning approach.
Four areas - approaches, design, technology, facilitation.
What?
Looked to the literature as well, looking at avoiding past PD mistakes eg no followup from short sessions, hands of spray and pray etc
Resources were to be simple -aimed at those with entry level skills in the area, to build confidence when taking first steps. Several pathways open f non-acreddited PD although can led to Diploma units.
Colourful graphic to be inserted if I can get an electronic copy.
Learner could work through it in quarters, or by stage (makes most sense when you see graphic)
Stages are: Begin, Explore, Discover, Plan, Develop
Have outsourced the resource development. Have been rolemodelling the types of learning processes and resource approaches that we would like them to be using in their own teaching practice. Does not yet look like evaluation is built in as a section, perhaps subsumed into other bits. As is implementation. Could be used in both online and also blended modes.
STDIFY = Somebody to do it for you
Support/ wrapping around framework is critical - another part of modelling good practice.
Challenges - standard list - culture, commitment, resources (people, $, time, computers), computer skills, measurement of change in practice and both student outcomes.
Q&A
Which technologies come under the banner? Huge range, but focus on selection, and recognise need to keep them up to date.
