Retention rate is still low in non-government sector as well, below national average. 2020 goal Australia's attainment /retention rate 90% - Finland and Singapore at 93% Industry: Why doesn't industry spend their money on training with TAFE? Used Anvers as an example VET Paradox: it is effective, valued & in demand BUT Industry is not spending it's own money in VET. only 10% spent with TAFE and TAFE earns only 5% from industry funds. 3 keys for increased participation, qualifications, productivity are: 1. Genuinely embraced VET as a pathway 2. Improve the range of courses in a supportive culture 3. Develop applied learning which is connected to work. What would a successful polytechnic student look like? Productive, responsible for self, compassionate, highly skilled, altruistic. Polytech circle diagram with the four quadrants. Pathways for a student through both academy and poytech options shown, both resulting in Bachelor's degree and also the polytech option including significant work experience. Independent researcher also being engaged to review process as well. Q&A: Does industry support? Yes What about more mature learners? How will it work for them? Mixture of ages already, youth learn in an adult environments and all benefit from mix of ages. Is TAFE the answer? Perhaps othe providers could do the job? Well that is where govt resources are locked up and where we have opportunity to make the significant changes that are needed now. Unsure about the streaming? Well up to student choice still, as it is now. What will be different will be the option to choose how you want to learn, rather than if you want to go to uni or not. Pathway from TAFE to Uni, Uni's don't necessrily understand the AQTF etc. Great relatips with UTAS make all the difference, they are supportive of Tas Tmrw and keen to make articulation work. Quals required for TAFE teachers in the new structure? Current Cert IV requirement. Aspiration to develop something like a Diploma of Applied Learning. Combination of college teachers and industry hopefully will lead to a significant opportunity for integrated, true vocational education AND training.
